003 | Tilmann Jarmer
Tilmann Jarmer is a ghost. Every now and then he materializes, releases fantastic music as part of the Alfred Quest crew, presents a stunning podcast or magical remix, and then he’s gone again. Germany’s biggest electronic music blog awards him the “Mix of the Year”, but well, a Soundcloud profile works just fine as the sole communication channel. It’s about the music, friends. So now here’s a beat tape that is incredibly fun, rich in ideas, musicality, and variety, and compiled with a huge grin.
Artist – Interview | Tilmann Jarmer
Where do you come from, where do you live now and when/why did you go there?
I’m from Erfurt but currently living in Berlin because of my love.
How did you come to producing or beatmaking?
I’ve always done it since there are computers with audio outputs.
What do you do when you sit down on a new track? Do you have a specific procedure / routine?
I don’t have a pattern except for the fact that I’m in the mood for it. The concrete triggers are usually certain sounds that create an emotion for me, I try to get deeper into that feeling. Usually, different unexpected things happen in the process. So that the result is not necessarily related to the initial trigger. The nice thing about music is that it doesn’t matter.
Is there a background story behind the beattape you created for us, what was the motivation, the inspiration?
All these tracks are a bit older but I really like them. Other candidates could not keep up on the long term.
What equipment do you use?
Ableton, records, the Internet. Live I only use my MPC 500, SP 404 and many cables.
Last but not least: What’s your life apart from the music?
I’m planning buildings and help organize the construction. It is similar to making music but takes longer, much longer.
