Artist – Interview | Chris Medleigh

Where do you come from, where do you live now and when/why did you go there?
I come from Leipzig and grew up here. Out of desire for a change of scenery, I lived a few years in Canada and a few years in Hildesheim due to my studies. Otherwise Leipzig is my “Place 2 be”. I kept coming back here. Here is my base, friends, family and a certain vibe I need and love.

How did you come to producing or beatmaking?
My musical path began with classical guitar lessons at the age of 9. As a teenager I became aware of hip hop culture through older friends and started with graffiti. A little later I wrote my first rap lyrics and made first attempts to produce beats on the computer. Three friends and me founded our first rap combo called Dialect and we wanted to do everything ourselves. As time went by I was more and more dedicated to producing and beatmaking. When I think about the progression it was actually so that I worked out arrangements in which I already filled the verse sections with melodies or harmony sequences, thus creating my own language or sound. And my sound didn’t necessarily need vocals.

What do you do when you sit down on a new track? Do you have a specific procedure / routine?
No. There are different situations that inspire me and I don’t like to commit myself to this process. Sometimes it’s a sample or a drum loop, a guitar riff or just a melody idea. Sometimes I just listen to the sounds of my sourroundings and an idea forms in my head. I try to capture these ideas with a dictation device or short audio recordings on my smartphone. I collect these ideas on my computer and over the years a quite extensive archive has formed. Here I almost always find what I’m looking for. This “warehouse” is constantly re-forming, since things that have already been used are taken out and new ones constantly end up in it.

Is there a background story behind the beattape you created for us, what was the motivation, the inspiration?
The main motivation was your request. I had a certain selection of unreleased tracks and when I wanted to finalize them, new ideas came up. This ultimately led to the completion of these tracks in the process and now form the tape. Furthermore, it is a nice mood mirror and soundtrack of my current life.

What equipment do you use?
MPC 1000, MPD 24, Midi keyboard, laptop, Ableton Live, various plug-ins
various synths, Hagstrom Hollow Body Jazz Guitar, Ibanez Bass Guitar, various guitar effects, various percussion, ZOOM H1, microphone RODE NT 2A, Technics RS 678 Tapedeck

Last but not least: What’s your life apart from the music?
I am a father of two children and I run a sole proprietorship which mainly deals with creative wood construction, i.e. planning, production and execution of natural wood playgrounds, wooden houses, furniture etc..[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
